Seems like every four years politicians tell us that “this is the most important election in our lifetimes.” This time they’re not making it up. In no previous election has the future of our democracy and the LGBTQ community been so at risk. We join together, past and current builders of this community, and urge everyone to participate in this election.
At stake are countless issues that will impact us as members of the LGBTQ community for decades— marriage equality, reproductive rights, discrimination, immigration, racism, voting rights, income inequality, healthcare, climate change—the list is staggering. This year, it is especially important to be informed of the issues. Whomever you vote for, we urge you to vote in support of our LGBTQ community.
We are writing to invite, encourage, and support your active participation in next month’s election. Write letters, send postcards, phone friends. Share with your fellow Billys the websites you have found helpful, communicate with your friends and make sure that they have the support they need to get out and vote. Get educated – there are countless websites such as the League of Women Voters https://www.lwv.orgthat can be helpful.
Participation in political issues that impact our lives is not new to the Billys. In our early years a Billy contingent carried a Billy banner in the 1993 March on Washington. Countless Billys over the years have participated in Get Out the Vote efforts, marched in demonstrations, found ways to educate each other on issues important to our lives. It’s part of being an active, supportive community. It’s part of living our values as stated in this portion of our values statement:
“We envision the creation of a world based on principles of nonviolence, sustainability, cooperation, service, and the building of deeper wisdom through shared perspective.”
∙ Speak up and speak out ‐ be the voice for equality, fairness, and justice.
∙ Get active ‐ volunteer, organize, and be the change you wish to see.
Because of the importance of this year’s election, eleven past and present presidents of the Billy Board have joined current Board members in urging you to become active in this year’s political process, as well as the two women who were on our founding board. It is unusual for the leadership of the Billys to send out a Call to Action like this to our community. These are unusual times. Please vote and encourage everyone you know to vote. Our future is at stake.
